The Madeira was a schoonerbarge that sunk on Lake Superior in 1905, during one of the biggest storms in Lake Superior history. It struck Gold Rock, where a crew member jumped to safety, and pulled 8 other mates with him. You can still see the outline of The Madeira as you stand on Gold Rock, & it's become a popular diving location.
I have always been fascinated by the power and serenity Lake Superior possesses. It's the closest thing we have to the sea. Growing up, my family would spend a week on the shores almost every year - skiing, hiking, reading books by the fire, & walking along the beach looking for sea glass.
The Madeira shows the uncertainty of life, & the beauty of what can happen when you are totally powerless. Although the ship sank, people who visit the site can still appreciate the beauty & awe behind the story, over 100 years later.
Photography is the same way - capturing uncertainties, failures, successes, & the courage shown to withstand these storms. Whether it's in your marriage, your family, your years of highschool - we are all ships being tossed. Let photography capture your journey so that generations later, we may marvel at your strength.
I don't believe in Pinterest poses, shot lists, & copying what you see on the internet. I'm not going to pose you perfectly or tell you how to smile. I believe in capturing what's in front of me - a unique, incredible human. I show up to a photoshoot in a solid pair of shoes, a playlist for any mood, & a heart that's ready to listen to your story. If you're looking for the cheapest deal or checking a vendor off your list, we might not be the best fit. If you're looking for someone to capture how fiercely your heart beats when he kisses you, how your soul sings when your baby grabs your hand, or how hard your Grandpa cried at your wedding.... Hi.

Hey, I'm Clare. I've been a photographer for about 5 years & my business was previously self-named. I'm getting married in September (!!) & since my name was gonna change anyway, I figured it'd be best to rebrand. So if you're here because you followed me when I was Clare Kolars Photography, HI! Thanks for keepin' up with me.
I'm based in the Twin Cities, but most of my weddings have been in other states - Maine, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Virginia, & Oregon. I grew up in Wisconsin on an 80-acre apple orchard with a wide open sky filled with sparkling stars. I spent my childhood running around barefoot in the mud with my siblings, trying to get them to eat worms and screaming when I had to take any kind of medicine.
I have a vivid imagination that often gets me deep into the creative rabbit hole and bans me from watching any kind of horror movie. I have bookcases of books that I've read many times and more Pinterest boards than anyone else I know (most of which are secret. sorry 'bout it). I've always wanted to learn how to sail, and if I could wish for a superpower it would be breathing underwater.
I love photography. It's been a huge part of my life even when I was little. I love sitting on my grandma's couch, looking through bins and bins of old photographs together and hearing all the stories that go along with them, previously forgotten. I want this for every one of my clients - and for myself when old age comes.
It would be a pleasure to work with you. If you feel our styles go well together, please inquire!
